Cowboy Action Shooting is a sport that revolves around local groups of participants who dress in late 1800’s dress and using late 1800’s-like firearms, revolvers, rifles, and shotguns, to compete in shooting “stages.” Stages consist of set-piece arrangements of targets that require the shooter to user different firearms at different places with differing numbers of reloads, all for fun. Youtube offers numerous videos of CAS events.Below is a link to the Single Action Shooting Society from which the Cowboy Action Shooting events arise:
What do I offer Cowboy Action Shooters?
To be pithy - pretty much every service you might want for your firearms! No joke.
I specialize in Ruger Vaqueros, Marlin lever guns, and Stoeger shotguns. But don’t think I am in any way “restricted” to upgrading just these - I can do marvel’s with pretty much any firearm from any manufacturer. Think of the below as specific examples - just examples! O, and if you want to get an idea of the improvements I can make come see me and I’ll let you handle one of these so you can see what you’d be paying for.
For Vaqueros
- Lighten the trigger pull significantly as well as smooth the action out tremendously.
- Make the cylinder revolve both ways to make it easier to unload.
- Replace the base pin with a custom fit one, tightening up the cylinder-to-bore tolerances, increasing accuracy
- I can also make your base pin securely lock such that it takes an Allen wrench to remove the base pin (absolutely ensures the base pin cannot possibly come loose during rapid fire)
- Tighten the lockup by replacing the cylinder latch with a custom fit oversized one.
- Fire-lap the barrel to improve accuracy.
- Hone the cylinder chambers to make your spent rounds fall out with a tip of the firearm
- And about any other modification, upgrade, or personalization you might want!
For Marlins
- Replace the two-part firing pin with a single piece firing pin which goes a long way towards reducing trigger pull and making for a smoother trigger pull.
- Smooth out the action significantly.
- Install a saddle-ring for the sake of authenticity.
- Fire-lap the barrel to increase accuracy.
- Replace the reloading lever with an oversized one that allows gloved hands to operate the lever.
- Replace the main spring to lighten the trigger pull, lighten the lever latch spring, and the lever safety latch spring. All these modifications make operation of the lever WAY easier for quicker follow-up shots
- Install leather-wrap around the bottom-side of the lever to add to the looks but more importantly to make operating the lever way easier on the back of your hand.
For Stoegers
- Replace the generally soft firing pins with hard stainless steel ones.
- Remove the automatic safety engagement that resets the safety when you open the barrels.
- Polish the action to make it smoother and the opening of the barrels easier so easy that when you turn the lock the barrels flop open on their own.
- Open up the entry to the chambers so rounds are easier to feed.
- Polish the cylinders to make your spent rounds fly out of the chambers.
- Custom fit the ejector which typically is poorly and inexactly fit such that it actually fits perfectly and operates with near zero friction.
