FOR NC RESIDENTS:

What do you need to purchase a handgun (general requirements)?

- Happy news - you now longer need a pistol purchase permit. If you don’t know what that is - it was a remnant of Jim Crow laws designed to allow sheriffs to prevent persons of color from purchasing handguns.  This was repealed by the Republican legislature of NC after overriding the Democrat governor’s veto in 2023.  Apparently the governor didn’t want persons of color having handguns.

-Your valid NC driver’s license or DMV issued picture ID card, either of which lists your current address.

- Be 21 years old.

- You may NOT be a felon or have been dishonorably discharged from the military

- For immigrants and those here on VISAs please contact the ATF for a list of the required ID.

FEES

1-2 Handguns - $35.00

3 Handguns - $40.00

4-15 firearms - $80.00

Any combination of handguns and long guns with three or more handguns, the handgun price applies

Also, please note “straw purchases,” or purchasing a firearm for someone else is a federal offense. This is to prevent persons who would not otherwise be able to purchase a firearm from getting someone else to purchase it for them.Purchasing a firearm as a gift is NOT a “straw purchase.”

FOR NON NC RESIDENTS (except military - military see below):

What do I need to purchase a handgun (general requirements)?

This section ONLY applies to someone living outside North Carolina who purchases a handgun from a dealer in North Carolina.  Unfortunately, federal law leaves rules governing handguns up to each individual state.  So there are technically fifty sets of rules regarding the sale of handguns.  You may still purchase a handgun from me (or another licensed dealer) even though you are not a NC resident, but you cannot pick up the firearm “in person” in North Carolina.  You will need to arrange for me to ship the firearm to an FFL dealer in the state in which you reside.  The process may be found below under “Purchasing a firearm online.”  You will need to meet the federal and your state’s requirements for the firearm and purchase of the firearm.

FEES

In addition to the cost of the firearm you will be responsible for paying for shipping which varies by size and weight.   Also, if you want the shipment ensured you will be responsible for that charge as well.  Once I have delivered the firearm to USPS my responsibility for the shipment ends.

Also, please note “straw purchases,” or purchasing a firearm for someone else is a federal offense. This is to prevent persons who would not otherwise be able to purchase a firearm from getting someone else to purchase it for them.Purchasing a firearm as a gift is NOT a “straw purchase.”

What do I need to purchase a long gun (general requirements)?

Unlike handguns, US citizens can purchase a long gun in any state and walk out with the firearm.

- Your valid driver’s license from any state or DMV issued picture ID card, either of which lists your current address.

- You must be at least 21 years of age (you MUST obey the age requirement for your state, and some states restrict purchasing long guns to those 21 or older.).

- You may NOT be a felon or have been dishonorably discharged from the military

 - For immigrants and those here on VISAs please contact the ATF for a list of the required ID

- You are responsible for ensuring the firearm meets whatever legal state restrictions on the firearm you purchase, including magazine capacity restrictions.
